Artist Statement-
Gender Euphoria
I chose to celebrate the color pink in this collection. When I first came out as a trans man, I lost a lot of friends, partly because I still wanted to wear a dress to my senior prom. The way that my gender identity and gender presentation opposed each other made a lot of people upset. Especially during the early 2010s when trans masc representation was even more limited.
When I moved to California for college, I decided to take my transition more ‘seriously’. I threw away all my makeup, and donated all my dresses and feminine clothing. I bound my chest everyday, wore baggy jeans and tried desperately to ‘pass’.
I was absolutely miserable.
Ironically, it wasn’t until I started to accept my femininity again, that I started to be treated like a man by strangers. Somehow, the transformation of truly accepting myself revealed a confidence and calm that translated to a masculine energy which I had buried inside myself.
