Artist Statement -
I wanted to include a long skirt in the collection as I often feel the most masculine in them, however I didn’t have anything else in my brain beyond that. As I drafted and created the skirt it started to take on a victorian style, and the image of a victorian war nurse came to me. (I had also just read Angel Down by Daniel Kraus, so that might have tied into the inspiration)
For me, the Garden of Eden depicts a multifaceted nature, curiosity, knowledge and the serious repercussions of disobedience and deviation from the mainstream. It reflects the complexities of human choice and asks us to question the nature of sin.
I decided to incorporate testosterone vials into this skirt to represent the fruit hanging from the tree of knowledge. I was scared when I first started hormones. I still wasn’t 100% I was transgender. I was constantly doubting myself. Despite my doubt and fear I knew that something needed to change. I needed to take action to keep myself alive.
